Nation IN BRIEF : PENNSYLVANIA : Penn Settles Case of Medicare Fraud
The University of Pennsylvania agreed to pay $30 million to settle allegations it submitted an estimated $10 million in false Medicare claims from 1989 to 1994. It is believed to be the largest Medicare settlement paid by a single provider, said Pat Marion, a Health and Human Services Department auditor. The alleged overbilling occurred at Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania, a group of about 600 doctors and 19 medical practices. Under the settlement, Clinical Practices and the doctors denied any wrongdoing.
