Sherman Oaks : Family Gets High-Tech Seat at Star’s Concert

He fills concert halls around the country with his gut-wrenching balladry--passionate tales of love and longing that have won Michael Bolton legions of devoted fans but little respect from music critics. On Thursday, a Sherman Oaks family welcomed him into their home for a one-of-a-kind performance.

He arrived via satellite.

Part of an upcoming cable television special, Bolton’s concert was beamed live from Sony Studios in New York into the homes of 10 contest winners nationwide. In return, fans were able to chat with the shaggy-haired singer by telephone during the 90-minute show.

For accountant Harold Eisenberg, it was a novel way of beating the “astronomical” cost of concert tickets. About 30 friends and co-workers were planning to join him and his wife, Linda, and children David and Susan, he said from his office in Encino on Thursday morning.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he said, marveling at the technology required to make the evening happen.

For 11-year-old Susan Eisenberg, it was a front-row seat--so to speak--with her favorite crooner.

“I love the songs,” she said. “I just love his voice.”

Harold Eisenberg said he’s not bothered by negative reviews of Bolton’s music.

“It’s soothing and mellow and uplifting,” he said.

Susan agrees.

“He just has a way with music.”
