Gov. Wilson received low marks in a Field Poll released Thursday that showed only 23% of those surveyed saying he was doing a good job and 34% rating his performance as poor.

“Since Wilson first took office as governor almost five years ago, his job performance ratings have been on the negative side in 20 of the 23 measurements taken by the Field Poll,” said survey director Mark DiCamillo.

The telephone poll was conducted Dec. 3 to 11 among 1,003 California adults. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

Californians reacted especially negatively to Wilson’s ill-fated presidential run.

In contrast, President Clinton and Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein received higher ratings.

The president was rated as doing a good or very good job by 38%. Another 40% gave him a fair rating while 21% rated him poor.

Currently, 33% of the public rate Boxer as doing a good job, while 24% rate her poor. And 31% said she is doing a fair job.

Meanwhile, 35% of the Californians polled rate Feinstein’s job performance as good; 24% consider it poor, and 33% consider it fair.
