Six Los Angeles police officers suffered smoke inhalation as they rescued about 20 people, including a few children, from a burning halfway house, authorities said Monday.

Officers arrived at La Casita Hotel near Sylvan Street and Tyrone Avenue in Van Nuys about 5:30 p.m. Sunday and, before firefighters came, checked to see if there were people in the building.

After going inside, four officers from the Van Nuys Division and two from the Foothill Division helped the residents to safety, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis said.

The officers suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to Valley Presbyterian Hospital, where they were treated and released later that night.

None of the residents of the halfway house was injured, authorities said.
