Apple, IBM End Taligent Partnership: Apple Computer Inc. and International Business Machines Corp. are ending their partnership in Taligent Inc., a firm devoted to advanced software designs. IBM will continue to operate Taligent as a subsidiary. The announcement had been expected. Taligent was formed in 1992 to develop a new operating system based on “object-oriented” design, in which parts of programs stand on their own and be can incorporated into other programs. IBM said that Taligent will remain in Cupertino, Calif., and continue to develop object technology. Although the company did not mention layoffs, some of Taligent’s 375 employees are expected to lose their jobs. Meanwhile, Apple said it has been unable to reach an agreement with Microsoft Corp. that would allow it to license the new Windows 95 operating system. In an annual filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Apple said it was nearing a Dec. 31 deadline when its license for Microsoft’s Windows and MS-DOS operating system will expire. It is not known whether negotiations are continuing.
