Plunder vs. Love

Share

At a time when thousands in this country will face a Christmas on the streets and CEOs are pulling down record yearly salaries (up to $35.9 million), it’s ironic that an article suggesting compassion for the poor and concern for an environment being plundered for quick profits is considered an idea from “the left” (Column Left, “Boiled by Oil, Assuaged by Gandhi,” by Donella H. Meadows, Dec. 3).

Although probably few in the U.S. appreciate Mohandas K. Gandhi’s viewpoints and efforts, we claim to understand Christ’s. At time when there is an ever-widening gap between the rich and the poor, we hear little objection from the religious right over plans to abandon the poor, sick and mentally ill, and further plunder the planet for short-term profits to benefit the already rich. Possibly Christ’s views, if they could really be heard, would also be most appropriate in a “Column Left” position.
