Clinton Signs Lobbying Reform Bill
President Clinton signed the first overhaul of lobbying laws in nearly 50 years Tuesday, hailing the bill as an effort “to bring lobbying in Washington into the sunlight of scrutiny.”
The measure, supported by Democrats and Republicans, will require most Washington lobbyists to register their clients and disclose the issues they are supporting. It also would force them to report how much they are paid.
Clinton called the bill an important step toward changing the clandestine nature of the political influence industry. He pledged to push other political reforms, including a campaign finance overhaul, that have languished in Washington.
