Coach John Robinson on Wednesday kicked one of his mainstays off the team for USC’s Rose Bowl game against Northwestern, but would not explain why.

Phalen Pounds, a 6-foot-7, 310-pound sophomore starter at right guard, got the boot for “a violation of team policy,” Robinson said, without elaboration.
