Central Los Angeles : DRUG SEMINAR
An education symposium for youths who live in public housing addressed substance abuse and other self-destructive behavior Thursday in Watts.
About 600 students, ages 7 through 14, who live in public housing projects in East Los Angeles, South-Central Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley and the Harbor area attended the first Youth Sports Drug Education Symposium.
The symposium, which took place at Markham Middle School, was conducted by the Youth Council of the Los Angeles Housing Authority.
The symposium consisted of lectures and workshops dealing with prevention of drug abuse and highlighting alternative positive behavior. The lectures were conducted by officials from the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science.
“The common goal here is to reinforce positive choices and that [the children] know they are somebody and don’t need to take drugs or be part of gangs,” said John R. Garcia, the youth coordinator for the housing authority.
