At least 145 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty this year in the United States, including 13 in the Oklahoma City bombing of a federal building, a police group said Friday.

The National Assn. of Chiefs of Police said the total is preliminary and is expected to exceed the 169 officers killed in 1994. At this time last year, the group’s preliminary count was 137 officers killed.

This year’s total includes 64 who were fatally shot and 50 who died in traffic accidents.

The explosion April 19 at the Alfred P. Murrah federal building in Oklahoma City killed 12 federal agents immediately. A 13th died three weeks later from injuries suffered in the blast.
