A Philadelphia man was convicted of unlawful restraint in the two-year imprisonment of his girlfriend in a hotel-room closet.

But Hiram “Jake” Thelmon, 29, was acquitted Friday of the more serious charge of kidnapping. He was accused of compelling Robin Daniels, 32, to spend almost all her time in a closet at the Kesmon Hotel from 1993 to this year.

The prosecutor said Thelmon cashed her Social Security disability checks to support himself. The defense argued that Thelmon believed he was protecting his mentally disabled girlfriend from a hostile world.
