Clinton to Nominate Eizenstat for Trade Post: Ambassador Stuart E. Eizenstat is currently U.S. representative to the European Union. If confirmed by the Senate as undersecretary of commerce for international trade, Eizenstat will lead the Commerce Department’s trade unit and oversee policy development, export promotion, and import laws and agreements. Eizenstat would continue to serve as a special envoy for the State Department, helping European officials recover Jewish property and U.S. citizens’ property confiscated during World War II and under communist rule in Eastern Europe, the White House said. Eizenstat, who was named to the Brussels post in 1993, was chief domestic policy advisor to President Carter and also worked as a lawyer in the Washington law firm of Powell, Goldstein, Frazer & Murphy.
