Police, City Agree to 1-Year Contract

The community’s Police Department employees and the city have agreed to a one-year labor contract that gives workers a 4.2% salary increase, effective March 1.

The City Council approved the pact at its Wednesday meeting. The 25 members of the Port Hueneme Police Officers Assn., which includes beat officers and office support staff, ratified the contract last week.

“Considering the financial situation of this city, I consider us fortunate,” union President Ken Dobbe said. “This council is demonstrating it’s got a commitment toward the Police Department.”

Memories are still fresh of a 1993 municipal financial crisis--precipitated by a $900,000 loss in state money--that nearly prompted the city to eliminate its Police Department and contract out for law enforcement services.

Police Department employees will also receive a $500 cash bonus in their first paycheck of the New Year.

Department workers received no wage increase last year. The agreement, which runs through Dec. 31, is consistent with salary increases awarded to other Port Hueneme city employees, Personnel Manager Karen Jackson said.
