Supporters of Ross Perot’s proposed Reform Party did not submit enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot in Maine, officials said Thursday.

Nearly a third of the signatures submitted by the group in December were ruled invalid, leaving it with 515 fewer than the 25,565 needed, Secretary of State William Diamond said.

The group had until Dec. 15 to collect and submit its signatures to qualify for the 1996 ballot. The party’s presidential candidate could still appear on the ballot but would have to run as an independent.

The Reform Party suffered a similar blow last month in Ohio, where many of the signatures it submitted also were ruled invalid. It has qualified for the ballot in California.
