Accustomed to Chandelier
I agree wholeheartedly with Laurie Winer’s perceptive review of the recent Theatre League production of “My Fair Lady” at the Alex Theatre (“Jodi Benson Works Hard in Fair ‘Lady,’ ” Dec. 15). However, I feel she did not go far enough in objecting to the incompleteness of the production.
When the producers of “Lady’s” first national tour were drafting their budget, they decided to have only two instead of three chandeliers in the ballroom scene that ends Act 1. Alan Jay Lerner heard about this and vehemently vetoed the idea. He said: “You can’t do that. It might be the third chandelier that made the show a hit!”
Imagine what poor Alan Jay would say to the Theatre League’s elimination of not only all the chandeliers, but the entire last two scenes of the first act!
What is next for the Theatre League? Will they produce “Les Miserables” without Javert? “Evita” without Che? The mind shudders at the possibilities.
