From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A man accused of shooting two people and taking four others hostage in an office tower appeared in court as investigators tried to sort out the reasons for his rampage. James Rincker, 24, was arraigned on charges of attempted murder, assault and kidnapping, and held on $550,000 bail. He shot two men and then held the hostages for 4 1/2 hours at the Charles Schwab & Co. stock brokerage in an office tower in downtown Portland, Ore. One wounded man was released from a hospital, the other remained in fair condition. Rincker was fired in November from his job as a package deliveryman. Police said he had problems with authority. Lt. C.W. Jensen, a police spokesman, said Rincker expressed frustration with financial, government and media institutions--”large, powerful organizations that control life in the United States.”
