. . . Orange County’s first major layoff of 1986 came when personal computer maker Commodore International Ltd. said it would close its Costa Mesa plant.

Nearly 200 worked at the factory, making the silicon chips used in all Commodore computers. Its operations were shifted to the company’s chip-making plant in Norristown, Pa.
