Two projects at Rancho Santiago College will proceed early this year, thanks to a $1.6-million federal grant.

In the first program, the college will buy computers for basic skills classes such as reading, writing, math and critical thinking.

The second project involves buying computer hardware and software to help develop a new financial and human resources management information system.

College officials said the system will improve Rancho’s financial operations, including payroll, purchasing and accounting.

The grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education. College officials said they will receive about $325,000 annually for the next five years.
