More than a third of Rwandan children who took part in a national trauma survey have watched other children hack people to death, and 95% witnessed violence during 1994, when an estimated 1 million people were slain in a civil war, a U.N. report says. The United Nations Children’s Fund, which conducted the survey, said that it found unprecedented levels of trauma among the 3,000 children interviewed. Leila Gupta, head of UNICEF’s Trauma Recovery Program, which conducted the survey, estimated that at least 75,000 Rwandan children still need mental health assistance.
