Canyon Classes--Kids of all ages are invited to attend programs at Oak Canyon Nature Center. Sessions may include a guided nature walk, crafts, special activities and take-home materials. The one-hour programs are offered weekdays. Cost is $3 per child.

* Nature Hikes for Tikes: Learn where squirrels, birds and other native creatures make their homes. Designed for ages 2 to 4. The class will meet Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m.

* Tykes on the Go: Explore the sense of touch through nature. How does an opossum’s fur feel compared to oak bark? Designed for ages 4 to 6. The class will meet Friday from 1 to 2 p.m.

* Afternoon Adventures: Interested in rocks and minerals? The Science is Nature Club offers hikes, games and experiments for youths ages 6 to 12. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

To get there, take the Riverside Freeway east to the Imperial Highway turnoff. Exit and head south to Nohl Ranch Road. Turn left and travel about three miles to Walnut Canyon Road, then turn left again. Pass the Anaheim Hills Golf Course; the nature center is at the end of the road, with parking on the left.

Docent Opportunity--Volunteer naturalists are needed to staff the Audubon House at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine.

Volunteers will assist with projects, greet visitors, work in the bookstore and identify wildlife.

Training sessions begin Jan. 30, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The class will include basic information on the sanctuary and workings of the Audubon House. A love of the natural world combined with energy and enthusiasm are required.
