FDA OKs Respiratory Drug for Infants

WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration approved the first drug Friday to protect infants and toddlers from the worst effects of serious respiratory viruses.
RespiGam is made from the blood plasma of healthy people whose bodies harbor large numbers of immune system antibodies that fight the respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV.
RSV is the leading cause of pneumonia and other respiratory infections in infants, which hospitalize 90,000 children a year and kill 4,500 in the United States.
