Day Runner Inc.: The Irvine manufacturer of organizers and planners reported that net income for the second quarter rose 40% to $4.9 million, or 75 cents a share, from $3.5 million, or 55 cents a share, a year ago. Sales for the quarter ended Dec. 31 were up 9% to $40.1 million from $36.9 million. Net income for the first half totaled $8.1 million, or $1.25 a share, 47% higher than the $5.5 million, or 85 cents a share, for the same six months a year ago. Sales increased 7% to $72.9 million from $68.2 million.
