San Gabriel Valley : Council Elects Mayor in Wake of Resignation

Share

The San Dimas City Council elected a new mayor Tuesday, ending weeks of uncertainty after ex-Mayor Terry Dipple’s sudden and unexpected resignation.

Curt Morris, a 15-year veteran councilman, will serve the remaining 14 months of Dipple’s term, but he said “it is still up in the air” whether he will seek election when the term expires in March 1997.

Dipple resigned two weeks ago in the wake of a forgery and embezzlement conviction involving the now-defunct San Gabriel branch of the Meals on Wheels program.

Morris was chosen to take Dipple’s place because “he is able to work with everyone on the council,” said Councilman Denis Bertone. “He was tested by the voters--he has gone before the voters four times--and he has won.”

Bertone said the high cost and potential contentiousness of a special election led to the decision to elect a mayor.

As mayor, Morris still has only one vote on council. But his new duties will include running the council meetings and sitting on the board of the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County. The City Council will hold a meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday to decide whether to appoint or hold an election for Morris’ replacement on the council.
