Two West Los Angeles men pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that they killed a man and critically wounded another in a shooting and car chase in Santa Monica last weekend.

Anthony Sanchez and Miguel Zapata, both 22, are charged with one count of murder and four counts of attempted murder in the fatal shooting of Cesar Martin of Culver City on Jan. 21.

Martin, 19, was shot in the back while driving with friends from a party in Venice. Santa Monica police said Martin allegedly had argued with Sanchez and Zapata at the party, and the two suspects pursued Martin in a car as he and his friends drove away.

Police said Sanchez fired from the vehicle that Zapata was driving, the bullets striking Martin and fellow passenger Eric Huizar, 20, of Inglewood. Huizar remains in critical condition.

A hearing was set for Jan. 30 at Santa Monica Superior Court. Both men remain in police custody, Zapata in lieu of $3 million bail and Sanchez in lieu of $2 million bail.
