FIRE SAFETY: A Hawaiian Gardens charity is donating 2,400 smoke detectors to residents in the wake of a December house fire in the city that killed five children and their grandmother.

A representative for the Moskowitz Foundation said the effort is intended to prevent a similar tragedy. She said families can receive up to two free smoke detectors at the Hawaiian Gardens Food Bank at 21411 Norwalk Blvd. The office is open between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
