Diabetic Last Seen at Anaheim Depot

Police and family members were searching late Saturday for an elderly, diabetic who apparently became confused and got off an Amtrak passenger train in Anaheim instead of his Oceanside destination.

Police said Gordon Esteson, 74, of Oceanside, had been missing since about 10 p.m. Friday when he left the train in Anaheim.

“He was helped onto the train in Los Angeles and was not supposed to get off until his family picked him up in Oceanside,” Sgt. Kirt Robertson said. “But he was confused and despondent and, for some reason, got off early.”

When Esteson failed to arrive in Oceanside, his relatives contacted Amtrak, Robertson said. One of the train’s conductors told investigators he had seen Esteson get off the train in Anaheim, the officer said.

By late Saturday, Esteson already had missed several insulin shots he takes for diabetes, relatives told police.

Esteson is 5-foot-8, 180 pounds. Police have asked anyone with information to call (714) 254-1900.
