Advanced Micro Devices to Spend $108 Million on Plant: The Sunnyvale-based company said it broke ground for the integrated circuit assembly-and-testing facility near Shanghai. The company’s Advanced Micro Devices (Suzhou) Ltd. unit is building the plant in the China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park. AMD (Suzhou) said it plans to start assembling and testing flash memories, programmable logic devices and communication devices there by late 1997. AMD said it expects to complete the 160,000-square-foot plant in 2004 and that it will employ as many as 1,500 people. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. designs, develops, manufactures and markets integrated circuits for telecommunications, office automation and networking applications.
