Healey Succeeds Santoro as Smartflex Chairman

William L. Healey, president and chief executive of Smartflex Systems Inc., a Tustin provider of electronic assemblies and sub-assemblies, has been appointed to the additional post of chairman. He succeeds Carmelo J. Santoro, the outgoing chairman, who will remain a director until the annual meeting scheduled for May. In addition, William E. Bendush, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Silicon Systems Inc., has been named a director of Smartflex. Silicon Systems is a principal stockholder and supplier for Smartflex. Richard A. Charpie and Stuart A. Auerbach, partners in Ampersand Ventures, resigned as directors, in order to avoid potential conflicts resulting from the recent acquisition of Xyratex, a competitor of Smartflex, by ADFlex Solutions Inc., another business investment of Ampersand Ventures.

* T. Andrew Stokes has been named senior vice president of corporate development for Nationwide Health Properties Inc., a Newport Beach real estate investment trust that invests in health-care facilities. Stokes, who has been with the company since 1992, will head up its efforts to acquire some properties and provide mortgages for others. Mark L. Desmond has been appointed senior vice president and chief financial officer. He previously served as vice president and treasurer.

* Robert S. Messina has been appointed executive vice president and general manager of Troy, a Santa Ana division of Pierce Companies Inc. that manufactures specialized printing systems, supplies and services. Messina joined Troy in 1994 as vice president of sales and marketing. Before that, he was general manager of Telautograph Corp.’s Omninote division in Los Angeles.

* Lee Rutter has been named director of human resources for the Newport Dunes Resort in Newport Beach. She had been assistant to the general manager since 1992. Also, Erica Schmidt has been appointed advertising director. She was previously an advertising executive at HomeBase in Irvine.

* Joyce Scherer has joined Jill Lloyd & Associates, a Costa Mesa marketing and public relations firm, as account coordinator. She will oversee projects for the Southern California Home & Garden Show, an annual event at the Anaheim Convention Center. Scherer was formerly real estate editor for the Daily Pilot.

* David G. Whitney has joined the Newport Beach office of Lee & Associates as a shareholder and senior vice president specializing in office leasing and sales in the general area of John Wayne Airport. Whitney was previously an office specialist with the Newport Beach office of CB Commercial.

* Richard L. Graham has been appointed sales and marketing manager for QED/inc., a Santa Ana manufacturer of aircraft pressure gauges and accelerometers. He was formerly with Eaton Corp. in El Segundo and the Wiggins division of Transdigm Inc. in Commerce.

Arlene Gulbenkian

* Arlene Gulbenkian has joined Danielian Associates, an Irvine architecture and land-planning firm, as a computer-aided design drafting operator. She had been freelancing as a model maker, designer, set builder and painter.

* Katherine Pflomm has been named media supervisor for Townsend & O’Leary Inc., a Laguna Hills advertising agency. She previously worked as a media supervisor for Bates USA’s West Coast shop.

* Lida Sedehi has joined Mailing & Marketing Inc., an Orange direct mail advertising company, as account coordinator. She was formerly with M.D.S. and Direct List Technology.

* Chuck Le Bon has joined Heinaman Contract Glazing in Lake Forest as project manager. He was formerly production manager for Carmel Steel Co.

* Joy Schaefer has been appointed president of WFS Financial Inc., the automobile finance subsidiary of Westcorp in Irvine. She succeeds Howard Reese, who announced his retirement but will remain on the board of directors as vice chairman. He also will join the board of directors of Westcorp. Schaefer had been the chief operating officer. In addition, Don Kasle has been hired as president and chief executive of Western Financial Savings Bank, Westcorp’s other major subsidiary. In that position, he succeeds Ernest Rady, who remains as chairman of the bank’s board of directors. Kasle was most recently chairman and chief executive of Bank One, Dayton, N.A. in Dayton, Ohio.
