Four children died in their sleep of smoke inhalation as a fire raced through their housing project row house early Monday.

Firefighters doused the flames that had nearly engulfed the first floor of the East Lake housing project and had begun moving up the stairwell.

Neighbors tried to rescue the four children, two girls ages 7 and 9, and two boys ages 5 and 6. Police withheld their names.
