Cold, Snow Create Chaos in Europe
From Britain to Yugoslavia, Europe shivered under a blanket of snow Tuesday as freezing temperatures brought chaos in their wake.
Blizzards trapped more than 1,000 drivers in their cars overnight in southern Scotland and brought down power lines across Britain, leaving more than 25,000 homes without electricity.
Danish government icebreakers went into action for the first time in nearly a decade to clear channels between Jutland and the islands of Fyn and Zealand, where the Danish capital, Copenhagen, is situated.
In France, snow covered the regions of Brittany and Normandy in the northwest. Rare snow also fell in southern France, and newspapers in Germany said the country was experiencing its coldest winter since 1986-87.
Forecasters warned that the Arctic snap is likely to continue in several areas.
