Mistrial Motion Denied in Breast Implant Dispute: A judge denied the motion by insurers being sued by Dow Corning Corp. to force them to honor policies covering breast implant claims. The insurers asked for a mistrial after jurors indicated they were aware of reports that the largest insurer had tentatively settled much of its case. Attorneys for insurers being sued by Dow Corning alleged that the company had “planted” the story to bias the jury days before it was to start deliberations. Dow Corning alleges the insurers reneged on policies to insure its silicone breast implants after the Midland, Mich.-based company was deluged with lawsuits starting in 1992.
