City Backs Housing Project for Seniors

Stressing that the housing needs of the elderly are a top priority, the Thousand Oaks City Council has unanimously approved a 60-unit apartment complex for senior citizens.

Council members voted 5 to 0 Tuesday night in favor of the four-story Oak Creek Senior Villas.

The project required seven waivers of city regulations to move forward, including an amendment to the land-use portion of Thousand Oaks’ General Plan, a zoning change and the removal of four oak trees.

“We now have an affordable project that seems to fit a need that we can never fulfill completely,” Councilwoman Judy Lazar said.

The building will be on the north side of Thousand Oaks Boulevard between Hodencamp Road and Broadway Avenue. The 1.83-acre parcel was the site of a Montessori private school, which was destroyed by fire in 1988.

The developer is Oak Creek Senior Villas Ltd., a partnership involving a Camarillo doctor, M. Philip Bacon, and Many Mansions, a Thousand Oaks-based nonprofit group that specializes in affordable housing.

Many Mansions will manage the apartment complex and handle applications. The group has a waiting list for the project of more than 250 names, Executive Director Dan Hardy said.
