Southeast : Rap Concert Aims to Register Young Voters

Share

The rap generation has come of age. Voting age, that is. And Compton activists figure it’s time for rap fans to exercise their franchise.

With the help of local churches and national organizations such as Rock the Vote and the Nation of Islam, Compton Community College officials have lined up a star-studded concert Feb. 17 aimed at registering young blacks and Latinos to vote.

Citing countywide statistics that only 3% of these minorities between the ages of 18 and 35 are registered to vote, organizers hope to put more young minorities on voter rolls as they pack the college’s football stadium to hear major recording artists including Ice T, Rass Kass, Mannish and Verbal Skilz. “We want to get [fans’] attention in terms of what’s important about voting,” college spokesman Ron Ellerbe said.
