Mock Trial Story Missed the Point

Share

* After reading the article on the high school mock trial competitions Feb. 2, I feel moved to write. I feel that the article, in an attempt to be cute and clever, has belittled and demeaned the tremendous efforts of the students, their coaches, the judges and the attorneys.

I am not sure how many proms the reporter has attended recently, but I would certainly not characterize the atmosphere as prom-like. Words such as tense, focused, serious, supportive, scared, prepared, nervous and relieved would more accurately describe the atmosphere.

The hours of preparation, planning and study that are required to produce the types of performances that indicate the understanding of the case and the law are much more important than the hairstyles and smells. I find it offensive that the reporter chose to include these elements at all.

The Ventura County Schools Office has encouraged, promoted and provided for this competition, in cooperation with volunteers from the private sector (lawyers), the judicial system (judges), school districts, teachers, students and parents. The commitment is great. Is this not a model for partnerships within our communities that encourage productive, directed, fun and thought-provoking activities for our youth? To reduce it to cute and frivolous is demeaning and insulting.
