Cal State Northridge will host a “Family and Consumer Sciences Career Conference” Saturday to focus on employment prospects in such fields as fashion, nutrition and interior design, according to campus organizers.

“We want to get people to look at what the future careers are,” said Alyce Blackmon, one of the organizers and the chairwoman of the family environmental science department.

On hand will be employers such as Sears, Roebuck & Co. and Bullock’s representing five career areas: child development, apparel, interior design, foods and nutrition, and consumer resource management. The representatives will talk about the evolution of their industries and about new careers cropping up, as well as provide student outreach and recruitment services, Blackmon said.

Adele Scheele, an author and CSUN’s career center director, will discuss skills for success, and nutritionist and Northridge alumna Carrie Latt Wiatt will be honored for her entrepreneurship in the health industry, Blackmon said.

About 400 people, including high school and college students and nonstudents looking to switch careers, have signed up for the free event, Blackmon said.

Anyone interested in attending may call (818) 885-3051 to reserve a lunch. The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University Student Union.
