Garden Club to Work in Lieu of Rent to City

Call it flower power.

The La Palma Garden Club has found a way to pay for using the Community Center as a meeting site without having to give money to the city. Instead, club members will donate their labors to maintain the city’s Memory Garden at the Civic Center.

The City Council approved the barter arrangement at its meeting Tuesday night. City Manager Daniel E. Keen said the city will benefit because the value of the work done by the club will be more than the $15 an hour that groups typically pay to use the Community Center conference room.

The Garden Club agreed to do all the weeding, trimming, raking and planting of the Memory Garden. The city will continue to pay for fertilizer and plant material as needed.

“It’s a good idea--a good exchange,” Councilwoman Eva Miner Bradford said.
