A Close Shave on Driveway Stains

Q. We were the victims of a prank recently, and our new concrete driveway was smeared with shaving cream. Even though it was washed off within an hour, it has left stains. Is there anything that might clean it off?

A. Numerous concrete cleaners are available, says Frank Eckert of Arrow True Value Hardware in Orange. Shaving cream might have some kind of petroleum product that has created the stain. Stay away from acid-based cleaners, which can damage the finish of your new concrete.

Q. I’d like to remove some old paneling in one of my rooms and just have drywall put up, but I was told this wouldn’t work. Are there any other ways of getting away from the paneled wall look?

A. Many people with dark paneling have decided to paint it rather than remove it, says contractor Rich Alms of Cypress.

Give it a good scrubbing with TSP and water to remove wax and dirt, then a light sanding to remove any gloss. If your paneling is grooved, you might choose to fill it in with a paintable caulk or spackling compound. Use a good oil-based primer/sealer on the dark surface first, then apply at least two finish coats of paint.

Q. The grout between our ceramic tiles has darkened and stained over a short period of time. What can I use to clean it?

A. While most ceramic tile is impervious to stains, grout seems to attract them, says tile installer Jay Edwards of Huntington Beach. There are numerous grout cleaners available at most tile stores, including cleaners for white grout.

Sealers should be used at least twice a year.
