Students Set for ‘Turn Off the Tube Week’

Students in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District will be turning in their television remote controls for “Turn Off the Tube Week.”

“It provides a great opportunity for families to get a grasp on how much time is spent in front of the TV and take control to decide what role they really want TV to play in their lives,” said Suzie Swartz, chairwoman of the event sponsored by the Saddleback Valley PTA.

The three-week event originated at Del Cerro Elementary School five years ago.

During the first week, students are asked to chart how much time they spend watching television and to discuss their findings with their families.

In the second week, students brainstorm ideas with friends and family to come up with alternatives to television.

In the third week, they are encouraged to sign a pledge to abstain from watching television for the full week--or at least to watch less.

Swartz said the PTA has planned special storyteller assemblies and “Turn Off the Tube” family nights during the final week for parents and students.
