Colleges : Transfer Program Getting High Marks
Orange Coast College’s Transfer Opportunity Program celebrates its fifth anniversary this spring, and its director and founder, Cheryl Jupiter, said she is proud of its accomplishments.
Established in spring of 1991, the program is designed to help the school’s minority students transfer to four-year colleges and was the first of its kind at an Orange County community college.
The program helps its students develop study and classroom skills. Participants are also assigned mentors and are taken to visit several colleges in Southern California.
Since its inception, Jupiter said, the number of students enrolled in the program has grown from 50 to more than 275. The school’s minority transfer statistics have also improved steadily in the last five years.
Last year, Jupiter said, OCC led Orange County’s community colleges in transferring underrepresented minority students to the nine University of California campuses.
Of the state’s 106 community colleges, OCC ranked first in the number of Native American students it transferred to UC campuses.
