Anderson & Anderson Names New Senior VP

Ben F. Hernandez has been appointed senior vice president and chief financial and administrative officer for Anderson & Anderson Insurance Brokers Inc. in Irvine. In addition to his responsibilities in the financial area, he will manage the company’s management information systems, administration and human resources. Hernandez was formerly senior vice president of finance, chief financial officer and treasurer at UniCare Financial Corp. in Irvine. Everett R. Newman Jr. has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer. He was previously vice president of Alexander & Alexander of California Inc., responsible for major national accounts in both the Japanese and risk management units. Newman will continue to serve as manager of the Los Angeles office. Edward C. Schumaker was appointed chief insurance officer and executive vice president of the Orange County office. He has been with the company since 1988, after serving as president and chief executive of Bayly, Martin and Fay of Southern California. Also, Sam J. Cunningham has been named chief benefits officer and will assume responsibility for employee benefits programs and operations at all of the company’s offices.

Michael A. Johnson has been appointed senior vice president and manager of First Interstate Bank’s 18 branches in north Orange County. He was formerly senior vice president and territory-wide manager of investment products in the bank’s central marketing division and a California statewide marketing officer.

Norm Farquhar has joined DataWorks Corp. in San Diego as executive vice president and chief financial officer. Farquhar, who has been on the DataWorks board of directors since last August, was previously senior vice president of finance and administration and chief financial officer of Wonderware Corp. in Irvine.

Marybeth Ochs has been named district manager for Merit Property Management Inc. in Mission Viejo. She joined the company in 1993 as an account executive.

Craig Morris has been appointed team leader in risk management services and will lead the property practice for the Costa Mesa branch of insurance broker Johnson & Higgins. Morris, who has been with the firm more than two years, was previously an account executive at Industrial Risk Insurance for six years.

Nelda Bregante has been appointed vice president of sales and telemarketing for Beech Street Corp., an Irvine managed health care organization. She previously was vice president of sales for the company. Bregante joined Beech Street in 1988 as a sales representative after working as a marketing manager for FHP in Long Beach and holding a similar position at CostCare in Huntington Beach.

Donald R. Howren Jr. has been appointed vice president of marketing for Platinum Software Corp., a financial software company in Irvine. He was most recently director of strategic alliances. In addition, Thomas E. Patton was named vice president of product development. He had been director of product development for the Platinum for Windows product line.

Dwight A. Steffensen has resigned from the board of directors of Bergen Brunswig Corp., a pharmaceutical wholesaler in Orange. Steffensen, a director since 1985, resigned as president and chief operating officer of the company last October to pursue other interests. He continues as a consultant.

Robert K. Cole has been named chairman and chief executive of New Century Financial Corp., a newly formed company in Newport Beach that offers flexible financing to borrowers. Cole previously was co-president and director of Plaza Home Mortgage Corp. Brad A. Morrice was appointed president and general counsel, and chairman and chief executive of the mortgage subsidiary, New Century Mortgage Corp. He was formerly co-president and director of Plaza. Steve Holder is chief operating officer for production/operations of the parent company, and president of the mortgage subsidiary. He previously was executive vice president of Long Beach Mortgage. Edward F. Gotschall was named chief operating officer for finance/administration of New Century Financial Corp., and chief financial officer of the mortgage subsidiary. He was formerly chief financial officer of Plaza.

Marc Ettinger has been named a partner in the Irvine law firm of Parilla, Militzok & Shedden. He has been an associate with the firm since its inception in 1989. Ettinger will continue his practice in general business and real estate litigation.

Kent Bourland has joined the Planning Center, a development planning firm in Newport Beach. He was formerly the principal of Kent Bourland Land Planning and was a partner with John Chapman Land Planning.

Lisa M. Springer has joined Glenn M. Gelman & Associates in Irvine as senior tax accountant. She was formerly a senior tax accountant at Deloitte & Touche in Costa Mesa. In addition, Brian O. Tunnelle and Lisa A. Worstell were named senior accountants. They have been with the firm two years.
