Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Black Groups Oppose Governors’ Cutbacks

A coalition of mostly black organizations asked Congress to reject proposals adopted by the nation’s governors for overhauling federal welfare programs. The National Governors’ Assn. last week adopted a series of recommendations for controlling costly Medicaid and welfare programs while giving states more discretion over how to spend the money. In a letter to congressional leaders, the coalition said the proposals would “make more children and families poor.”
