Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky announced Wednesday that he will grant $20,000 to the West Valley Boys & Girls Club to help build a second center at Columbus Middle School in Canoga Park.

“It’s critical that we try to provide our community’s young people with the widest possible variety of positive recreational opportunities and social activities,” Yaroslavsky said in a statement.

The money is part of $1 million in discretionary funds that county supervisors are authorized to donate annually to community organizations in their districts.

The Boys & Girls Club was able to match Yaroslavsky’s $20,000 grant with other donations. The group plans to convert a metal shop classroom at the middle school into a teenagers’ club, which will include a game room and lockers, Yaroslavsky spokesman Joel Bellman said.

The classroom that will house the club will be air conditioned and fitted with new tiling and lighting, Bellman said.

The Boys & Girls Club hopes to open the facility later this year.
