New Building Planned for Middle School

The city’s school district is ready to begin construction of a new building at Washington Middle School, pending approval of the project by the State Board of Education.

La Habra City School District trustees approved submission late last month of an application to begin the construction, which will replace a structure built on the campus in the 1920s.

That building housed the school’s library and two classrooms. It was closed last summer, and the library was moved to a classroom. The two classrooms were moved to temporary portable buildings.

The closure was necessary, school officials said, because the building does not meet state standards.

Upgrading the old structure would have cost more than building a new one, district officials said. Cost of construction, however, has not yet been determined, they said.
