ON THE MOVE: In need of a make-over (F1A), but tired of Jane Fonda tapes in the family room? Maybe you should do your jumping jacks in the Caribbean. . . . For the last decade, fitness guru Sheila Cluff has been staffing as many as six cruises a year with instructors from her Ojai resort. The 59-year-old Cluff, who owns The Oaks at Ojai and The Palms at Palm Springs, will be on an October cruise in the Caribbean herself giving stretch classes and wellness lectures. . . . Cluff’s daughter, Cathy, who works at The Oaks, says the cruises attract many clients of the two resorts “who are happy to incorporate their workout routine” into their vacations.

FALSE ALARM: Traffic officials are tired of fielding complaints from irate residents of east Ventura, where railroad crossing guards suddenly activate even when there are no trains to heed (B1). When the long, wooden arms come down, whole neighborhoods are cut off. . . . “We’re very frustrated,” city Traffic Engineer Nazir Lalani said. “We’ve been trying to get the railroad to do something about this problem for at least a year, and it’s just not happening.”

MOMENT OF PEACE: After years of spending Tuesday mornings bickering over public policy, Supervisors Maggie Kildee and John K. Flynn have agreed to make up--for at least as long as it takes them both to serve on a task force being formed to save Camarillo State Hospital from closing. . . . “Do you think we could bury the hatchet long enough to serve together?” asked Kildee, who has opted not to seek another term on the Board of Supervisors. For the record, Flynn said yes.
