Grove Confident of Replacement

Grove Theater Center officials say they are confident about replacing the Musical Theatre Company and that they aren’t worried about losing rent during the transition now that MTC has relinquished its status as a company-in-residence at the center.

The financially strapped musical troupe’s withdrawal could cost GTC $14,000 if a new resident isn’t found this season, GTC executive director Charles L. Johanson said Wednesday. The troupe, which withdrew to erase a $60,000 debt, had three more productions scheduled.

Johanson said that GTC had been charging the fledgling musical troupe reduced rent, “but by finding new tenants [whom we’ll charge] a standard rate, I’m confident we’ll cover the loss in the long run.”

He added that musical theater companies have recently expressed interest in GTC residency, but he would not identify any. GTC’s other residents are the Broadway on Tour children’s theater company and Pacific Standard comedy troupe. GTC stages its own theatrical season.

Meanwhile, the Musical Theatre Company plans to stage “Sunday in the Park With George” at Laguna Beach’s Forum Theater in August and September and hopes to find venues for the rest of its season. Subscribers may use their tickets to attend the three remaining dramatic plays in GTC’s own season, Johanson said.
