Group Seeks Probe of Gerber Ads: A consumer group charged that Gerber Products Co. is misleading the public about the nutritional value of its baby foods and asked the government this week to investigate the company’s advertising. The Center for Science in the Public Interest said many Gerber claims, including one that “nutritionally, you can’t buy a better baby food,” are untrue. The group said Gerber, unlike other manufacturers, adds water, modified food starch and sugar to many of its products. Gerber, which has about 70% of the baby food market, called the allegations “utter nonsense” and said consumers can continue to trust the quality and safety of the food it has prepared for 65 years. The FTC said the petition will be reviewed.
