TOKYO —
Rescue workers discovered the body of a man in a collapsed tunnel in northern Japan on Friday, but the fate of 19 others trapped for a week remained unclear.
Since last weekend, rescuers have dynamited and dug through the rubble of the tunnel on the northern island of Hokkaido. The man found Friday had been crushed to death over the steering wheel of his car as he drove to work.
He was killed when a skyscraper-sized rock slid off a mountainside and crashed through the tunnel roof last Saturday, trapping his car and a bus carrying 19 people.
