Futon Frame Is Easy to Build and Handy to Have Around

Because it’s easy to put together and use, a futon frame and mattress set is pretty handy to have around the house. Folded up, it makes a comfortable, casual couch for the den or family room; folded down, it’s a firm bed without the springs and lumps of a conventional sofa bed.

The versatility and space-saving convenience of a futon set make it ideal for small apartments, spare bedrooms or wherever there’s a limited amount of room.

This frame is so simple to build that the entire project should take no longer than an afternoon. It requires only four cuts of Douglas fir and pine and only 18 pieces in all. Assembly requires fastening four nuts and bolts, and gluing and nailing the slats.

The six basic steps: Trace the parts onto wood from full-size patterns, cut them out, drill holes as indicated, sand, assemble and finish with stain or paint.

The design is flexible and can be made in twin, full or queen sizes. The accompanying futon mattress can be purchased at a local bedding shop or import store. The frame can easily be disassembled and stored in three pieces.
