Mission Viejo Upsets No. 1 Claremont

Mission Viejo made four of five penalty kicks to upset top-seeded Claremont, 4-3, on penalty kicks, in a Division I girls’ first-round soccer game Saturday at Claremont.

Both teams made their first three penalty kicks, before Claremont sailed its fourth attempt over the top of the net. Suzy Margolis kicked the ball into the corner to give Mission Viejo the victory.

Mission Viejo (16-6-2) will host Palos Verdes Peninsula (18-3-4) Thursday in a quarterfinal game.

Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Cochrun came up with 14 saves for the Diablos.

With the teams scoreless after regulation, Nichole Avila put Mission Viejo (16-6-2) up, 1-0, eight minutes into overtime on a penalty kick. Claremont (19-2-4) tied it with three minutes left when Kylie Divens nailed a shot from 30 yards.
