Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Study Says Monkeys May Have Math Skills

Monkeys may be able to add and subtract, U.S. researchers reported. A team from Harvard University and Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Mass., said rhesus monkeys they studied in Puerto Rico appeared to be able to perform basic arithmetic. In an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers wrote that the different responses to a test similar to one that showed human infants have inherent recognition abilities indicated that monkeys may have “limited, innately specified arithmetical ability.”
